Remote Hideaways

Sometimes, romance is all about big gestures - a sweeping tour of Europe, or perhaps a glamorous night out in New York. Other times, however, the most amorous thing in the world can be simply finding some quiet. Since this kind of serene escape is more appealing now than ever, we've looked to the ends of the earth to find you the best ones. Here are four remote and romantic destinations for you and your love to escape to.

AN ISLAND IN THE ATLANTIC

Traveling to Fogo Island will force you to rethink your definition of "remote." Off the already rural Canadian province of Newfoundland, this island sits in the thrashing north Atlantic and is home to one of the world's most remarkable hotels: the Fogo Island Inn.

With a nod to traditional outport design, this inn sits dramatically atop stilts overlooking the sea. Here, however, the romance is as much about the island's natural surroundings as it is any luxurious design. Breathe in some of the purest air on earth while watching for icebergs, whales and puffins; hike Fogo's rocky shores; pick wild berries; and enjoy bonfires and stargazing as darkness falls each evening.

On Fogo, you'll also be privy to one of the world's most rare dining experiences. The inn's menus are organized around the island's unique "seven seasons," with ingredients that are foraged, farmed and hunted on its subarctic terrain. Indulge in dishes like scallops with parsnips and rhubarb jelly, or salt cod with shaved turnip and bakeapples (a unique type of foraged berry).

A HISTORIC FARM IN VERMONT

Twin Farms' history is a love story of its own, beginning in 1928 when the novelist Sinclair Lewis bought an 18th century farmhouse for his fiancee Dorothy Thompson. Today, this Vermont farmhouse and the 300 quiet acres it sits on are part of an internationally renowned resort.

Each of Twin Farm's ten unique cottages were created by local architects and designers; guests get to settle into their private lodgings surrounded by features like cathedral windows, mid-century furnishings, hand-thrown brick fireplaces and artwork by the likes of Roy Lichtenstein and David Hockney.

Whatever the season, Vermont's landscapes will keep you and your loved one busy. When the snow falls there's ice skating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and even downhill skiing on their private hill when conditions allow. Summers are made for picnics, swimming in Copper Pond and getting out by canoe or by bike. Each evening, guests enjoy world-class cuisine from a menu that changes daily and is paired with wine from Twin Farms' 15,000 bottle private cellar.

A CALIFORNIA COASTAL ESCAPE

Take time to yourselves on the wild west coast with a trip to Ventana Big Sur. On 160 redwood-filled acres with the churning Pacific below, this secluded resort is an ideal spot to reconnect and relax. First and foremost, eco-friendly Ventana will ensure you're ready to get out and explore; head to their Excursion Outpost to get set up with everything from Patagonia daypacks to beach blankets for your daily adventures. Perhaps you want to hike a pre-prepared gourmet picnic into the wilderness for a romantic meal, ride horses down the beach or melt into the healing waters of the cliffside Esalen Hotsprings.

When you're not out exploring you can relax in Ventana's Japanese baths, and take advantage of their new outdoor cabanas for a private spa experience in the fresh coastal air.

AMONGST THE TREES IN MAINE

Tucked away in the woods outside of Kennebunkport, Maine is Hidden Pond, a rural resort that's designed for luxurious but down-to-earth getaways. Their picturesque cottages stand amongst a balsam and birch forest, each crafted for comfort, quiet and privacy. Mornings begin with the delivery of a bakery basket and the New York Times, both of which can be enjoyed with a cup of coffee on your screened in porch.

The resort also provides beach cruisers for their guests, guided forest therapy nature walks, hikes around Hidden Pond and a self-guided tour of their organic farm (including a flower garden that guests are encouraged to pick a bouquet from!).

In the evenings, room service can be ordered from Earth, the resort's farm-to-fork restaurant. Maine's natural gifts are on display with dishes like lobster tostadas, local mushroom toast, coffee rubbed venison loin and brioche doughnuts (the latter of which you may end up ordering twice).

The following hotels provide places for you to relax, restore and find love in the most romantic of settings. Plus, you'll enjoy the bonus amenities available through SELECT.
